Drul in their natural habitat

While known to other species as greedy expansionists and shrewd merchants, the Drul are actually deeply committed to the “Dharkaa”, which is a mix of political and personal thoughts and beliefs that guide Drul societies. The Drul are moved by quasi-religious motivations, pushing them to fulfil their species’ purpose of expanding across the known galaxy. To the Drul, mercantile expeditions are similar to missionary work. The line between priests and merchants are duly blurred and often confusing for the other species. Temples and marketplace often share the same space in their watery planet.

Long before the Drul became the expansionist merchant empire they are today, they had humble beginnings as warring tribes of Thassala. In fact, the name Drul originates from the basic unit of Drul society. A Drul is a collection of 30–40 different families living within a certain territory, often using natural borders such as coral reefs or trenches as boundaries between different groups. Thassala, centuries before the conception of space travel, had hundreds and thousands of different Drul groups inhabiting the ocean wide planet — with 88 of these tribes being the biggest and most influential. Most of the time, war between two Drul groups happen when there are territorial conflicts, often as a result of earthquakes changing or rearranging the natural division that kept the two groups apart. During these times, Drul society was stagnant. Interactions between two different Drul groups are either for war or conflict resolution, and often ending in a stalemate. It was a period of endless strife that prevented the Drul from progressing past their semi-tribal societies.

Things eventually changed when Dhar the Far-seer became the chieftain of the Matonikka, the 87th tribe of Thassala. Dhar was gifted with the ability of psychic foresight, which allowed him to predict which battles he would win or lose. This gave the Matonikka the advantage in their struggle against the Parrun, the Oesipassus, and the Taosiki — the three bigger tribes that the Matonikka had bordered with. Dhar conquered and assimilated the three tribes, and eventually the whole planet, ending the centuries of warfare and establishing the first Drul civil society, allowing economic and technological development in the long period of peace that followed. Dhar’s name means the “Wave” and he was given the title of Kaa, which means “The Great”, hence the central philosophy of the Drul is based on the achievements of Dhar-Kaa, who expanded his tribe and established peace on the planet.

Drul culture is far from homogenous. The conquest of the thousands of tribes resulted in a hotbed of mixed cultures and traditions that differ from each region in Thassala. The metropolitan societies of the Drul helped them in their subsequent expansion into space. The only thing keeping Drul societies together is the “Dharkaa”, the belief that expansion means absorbing the culture group of another in order to promote trade and peace, which was believed to be a divine and religious relationship that Dhar established during the age of strife. The Drul take power from their species’ diversity, using it to adapt to any situation they find themselves in.
